The idea behind Good Chat, a new monthly series of talks hosted by Habitat Workspace, is to create a super casual networking event for people who hate networking.

Good Chat’s also about bringing Byron businesses, large and small, together so they can get inspired by people who are doing good. And in that regard, we’ve got one of the best coming with Jamie Cook, co-founder of Stone & Wood.

The brains behind Stone & Wood, Jamie’s going to talk about the power of having a good plan but also knowing when to ditch it.

Good Chat is a free event. Snacks and wine are provided by Habitat plus good beer thanks to Stone & Wood.

Byron Zero Homeless Day

Zero Homeless_banner.jpg

Byron Bay is famous for being a tight-knit and caring community. It also has the highest number of people sleeping rough in regional NSW.

There’s no quick and easy fix, but there are proven ways to solve homelessness. We just need your help.

On Oct 10 (World Homeless Day) every business around Habitat will donate 10% of sales to support the Byron Zero Homeless Project. Habitat management will also donate all retail rent from the day.

So, come and shop at Habitat on Thurs, Oct 10, and we can help end homelessness in Byron, sooner than later.

You can learn more about the Byron Zero Homeless Day initiative here.

The Art of Pairing at Barrio

Start with snacks and sparkling wine, then taste your way through 5 Italian cheeses and wines.

Cheeses are served with a presentation by the Queen of Cheese Penny Lawson while local legend Russ Berry from Where the Wine Things Are will discuss the pairing and how to match wine with cheese.

The night will be filled with lots of laughs, information and a few cheeky surprises.

BARRIOXPENNYS_DINA3.png

“I am so passionate about all cheese and especially working with quality Italian cheeses. Barrio’s Co-Owner Dan Wyllie is a close friend and whilst we were travelling in Italy we went to the Slow Food Cheese Festival and we fell in love with Italian cheese.  I am looking forward to coming to Barrio Eatery & Bar in Byron Bay, and sharing my knowledge and experience of the history and culture of Italian cheese and gastronomy.”

Penny Lawson loves nothing more than opening up a new wheel of cheese and seeing what the season and the age have done to the flavour and texture. Her knowledge of cheese has earned her the title “Cheese Queen” in Sydney, and her toasties are known far and wide as the city’s most decadent and delicious on offer.

Expect an evening curated by the Cheese Queen herself with a selection of hard, soft and everything-in-between Italian cheese. Award-winning Sommelier and wine-educator Russ Berry will be pairing wines to each cheese.

The Art of Pairing, Monday 16 September at 6pm. $60 per person.

For bookings over 6 people, please email: gather@barriobyronbay.com.au

Slinging Plates at Barrio

We are excited to announce Head Chef Dennis Baker from Shelter in Lennox will be Slinging Plates with Francisco Smoje at Barrio Eatery & Bar on Tuesday 27 August.

With the community in mind, Shelter uses ethically sustainable, seasonal products sourced from local producers and suppliers. Last year Dennis was awarded a hat in the Good Food Guide for his ambition and verve.

“We are looking forward to experimenting with Barrio’s wood fired oven and charcoal grill while bringing a taste of Shelter Lennox to the Byron Bay community.” – Head Chef Dennis Baker, Shelter

What is Slinging Plates?

On the last Tuesday of the month Barrio head chef Francisco Smoje invites a new culinary artist to create affordable dishes at fixed price points for the local community to enjoy. Chefs are encouraged to work with local producers and have the freedom to create a signature dish or something different to what they’re usually known for.

This month, enjoy Dennis’ award-winning cooking with $10 / $20 plates (meat & vegan friendly options) alongside a $10 glass of wine by Ochota Barrels at Addley Clark Fine Wines.

Slinging Plates at Barrio

On Tuesday 30 July, local farmer Palisa Anderson from Boon Luck Farm and restauranteur of Chat Thai is slinging plates with head chef Francisco Smoje. Expect Asian inspired dishes using hard-to-source organic ingredients from the farm.

In addition to supplying the family’s own cafes, Palisa’s success as a restaurateur-turned-farmer has given her a world stage. Boon Luck Farm supplied Danish chef Rene Redzepi during his 6 month Noma restaurant pop-up in Sydney in 2016 (He then asked her to address his Copenhagen MAD symposium for 1000 of the world’s best chefs and restaurateurs) and also supplies Australia’s top restaurants including Momofuku, Quay and Ester.

“Slinging Plates is a great way for businesses to support each other and for locals to try something new. It's about people hanging out and having new conversations - a new kind of evening that engages locals, chefs and winemakers, and becomes a discussion point.” - Head Chef Francisco Smoje

Jared Dixon is pairing his favourite Jilly Wines from his small batch winemaking company based in Clunes. Each vintage is the culmination of a creative journey, and marks a time and a place of creativity and inspiration that can never be reproduced in the same way.

And if that’s not enough to lure you out of the house on a Tuesday night, perhaps the prices will.

Slinging Plates at Barrio

On the last Tuesday of every month, Barrio head chef Francisco Smoje invites a chef friend to join him in the kitchen for Slinging Plates.

David Lovett joins the line-up on Tuesday 28th May with Moorooduc wines to match.

Renowned for classic Italian cooking (and the best focaccia in the Shire), David Lovett is very much a Nonna in the kitchen. It’s all done by hand, no fancy gadgets or methods, just simple honest food, highlighting the best produce of the Northern Rivers.

“I’m looking forward to being back in the kitchen, playing with fire, making the most of Francisco’s fantastic charcoal grill and putting it through its paces.” – David Lovett

Subpod Community Composting Session

Habitat Engaged Workshop.jpg

Come along to the Habitat gardens on Wednesday 8th May, from 4.30pm and get to know Subpod – the in-ground composting system that turns food waste into food for the soil right there in the garden bed!

Habitat residents are now diverting their green waste from landfill by feeding the worms and microbes in their communal Subpod gardens, enriching the soil and growing herbs and vegetables all on location, right outside their back doors.

As part of International Composting Awareness Week (5th-11th May), Compost Central are holding this special ‘show & tell’ talk. Join founder and Subpod compost designer, Andrew Hayim De Vries, as he shows us how Subpod is used to make composting a part of everyday life within the community, along with tips and tricks on how you can make composting easy in your own backyard.
