ENVIRONMENT & DESIGN

REDUCING OUR IMPACT

There’s no such thing as being truly sustainable when you’re building things from steel, bricks and concrete. We get that. But that hasn’t stopped us from trying to make Habitat an environmentally friendly place. Here’s some things we’re proud of:

KILLING THE COMMUTE

A big goal for Habitat was providing a way of life that isn’t reliant on getting in a vehicle all the time. Being able to live, work and play all in one place means fewer cars on the roads and less emissions. Building on this philosophy, Easy Street Living taps into the global tiny home movement, which is about living a simpler life, using less building materials and sharing things like cars, e-bikes and a pool, instead of everyone buying their own.

LOVING OUR H20

Water is life, so we went deep in thinking about where to get ours, how to use it and what steps we could take in treating it. As a result, our gardens are fed with recycled water from the local treatment plant, our toilets operate on rain water and all storm water is channelled through cleverly designed swales into natural reed beds (little gardens with plants) which balance the acidity before slowly releasing it back into our ecosystem.

SHARED GREEN ENERGY

We designed Habitat with an embedded energy network, which means the power created by the substantial solar system across our rooftops stays within the community, keeping costs down and allowing Habitat to run on hyper-local green energy. Not bragging (much), but we also installed the very first Telsa batteries in the country.

CREATING SOIL

Supporting local Byron company Subpod, we’ve installed 30 of their clever below-ground composting systems, so everyone in Habitat has the opportunity to turn food waste into glorious living soil. Part edible garden, part garden bench, our Subpods compost tonnes of waste each year, eliminating the carbon & methane emissions that would typically come from rotting food.

PLUGGING IN

Knowing the future of transport is electric, Habitat has a number of dedicated charging stations for electric vehicles, placed in prime locations for ease of use. Furthermore, we partnered with Popcar, the car share service, so people can get rid of their cars altogether, only paying for a vehicle when they need it. Or, residents of Easy Street can always grab one of our complimentary e-bikes and cruise around town emissions free!
