MORNING MUSINGS : 1000 CLAY CUPS

MORNING MUSINGS : 1000 CLAY CUPS

EXPLORING THE PIVOTAL RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN MAKERS + MORNING RITUALS

Save the date! Morning Musings: 1000 Clay Cups, curated by The Outliers, will be popping up on Easy Street from 13 - 20 April. 50 artists from around the world have participated, each completing 20 unique cups/mugs that are available for purchase.

Join us for Opening Night from 5pm on 13 April for drinks, nibbles, and a special surprise!

The exhibition concept is one I've had rattling around my brain for years, inspired partly by 1000 vases, and my own handmade eclectic mug draw, that even at 5am, I open, pause and consider the vessel which will house my most important liquid of the day, my first coffee.

I've always been fascinated with people's routines - I have always loved reading "24 hours with..." to try and gain insight into what makes people tick, what gets them up in the morning, what motives them, what's their 'ikigai'? Nicole, The Outliers

Each artist has written their own "Morning Musing" - all wildly different and individual, but collectively setting their intention for the day, generally with hands wrapped around a handmade vessel, be it theirs or another maker. It's a little insight into the world our wonderful makers - a little bit of ikigai - their reason for being and what inspires them to make.

Each artist "Morning Musing" accompanies the cup/mug upon purchase and also is published online.

Cups/mugs are available to purchase opening night and throughout the exhibition, and online from 9am 14 April.

ABOUT THE OUTLIERS + OWNER NICOLE STEELE

Nicole Steele has been working and connecting with artists and makers for over 15 years.

Armed with a Bachelor of Design, her twenty-year career as a graphic designer saw her work applied to many a product within the multi-national food sector. Facing burn-out, she applied her honed eye to ceramics; crafting and working with a team to produce a range that is still popular to this day.

A co-creator and founder of Nikau Store in Byron Bay, Nicole created a curated space of approachable ceramic collections from around the world - bridging the gap between artist and collector, no matter the budget.

The Outliers sees an expansion of this vision – alternate perspectives, pursuing crazy ideas, and ultimately, curating exhibitions that make your jaw drop. Art is for everyone, but in no way is it confined to four gallery walls anymore. It's time to get a bit weird!

Barrio BBQ with Guest Chef Dan Medcalf

Barrio BBQ with Guest Chef Dan Medcalf

Joining chef Santiago Socrate at Barrio Eatery & Bar’s guest chef BBQ on Wednesday 24 August 2022 is Chef Dan Medcalf from No.35 Kitchen and Bar in coastal Cabarita. The duo will be serving up perfectly executed Italian crowd pleasing Italian piadinas.

Call it a sandwich, call it a party, call it whatever you like. The cult of the piadina is a real thing, and you won’t want to miss out on these hot iron griddled flatbreads filled to the brim with some of the best Northern Rivers produce.

Expect grilled eggplant, buffalo curd and pickled pine nuts layered on to fresh-charred bread; Sticky glazed BBQ ham, radicchio jam and salted ricotta packed piadinas; and Spicy BBQ lamb sausage, broccoli rabe and salsa verde rolled together in a warming piadina sandwich.

Other Italian curiosities include Kingfish cannoli, BBQ jalapeno, and smoked crème fraiche; or Beef tartare on toast, pickled mustard, and horseradish. Finish with No. 35’s famous house-made tiramisu.

After years at the top of the Sydney food scene (including stints at Icebergs Dining Room and Bar, Assiette and The Dolphin Hotel) in 2021, chef Daniel Medcalf opened his own Italian restaurant with co-owner Rachel Duffy (previously GM at Icebergs for 15 years), No.35 Kitchen and Bar in Cabarita in 2021. Raised in Byron Bay, Medcalf’s fuss-free modern Italian venue embraces relaxed family dining.

"It's great to be cooking back in the bay with some excellent people. Australians love a barbecue and I'm no exception - it's my kind of dining, just super casual and inclusive. The piadina is a fun casual way to enjoy beautiful BBQ meat, fish and veg around a fire with your mates. After all, life’s just better in a sandwich! I’m looking forward to partnering with Santi and his amazing crew for a mid-week shindig over some Italian-inspired cooking, some tasty wines, and a couple of cocktails."

There will be two seatings at 5/5.30pm or 7/7.30pm. Booking essential.

Barrio BBQ with Guest Chef Ollie Wong

Barrio BBQ with Guest Chef Ollie Wong

On Wednesday 20 July 2022, Chef Ollie Wong will be joining Barrio for one night to give a sneak preview into what to expect from his soon-to-open debut restaurant Bar Heather in Byron Bay.

The Bar Heather team (of Luna Wine Store fame) will be pulling out some special and rare bottles from their cellar for the night, a taste of what is to come from their natural wine collection.

"I’m excited to experiment in the kitchen of friends in town and show people what to expect from Bar Heather once we open. What informs us in the kitchen is firstly what is in the glass and then we work back from there rather than the other way around. With some of the world's most precious natural wines swirling in the glasses at Bar Heather, the decision of what to cook opens up, and Barrio's charcoal isn't a bad place to start". - Chef Ollie Wong

Guest Chef Ollie Wong’s BBQ menu takes inspiration from the fresh produce available in the Northern Rivers, and dishes he has enjoyed along his journey.

Example plates include Oysters with red rice vinegar, charred onions and cucumber; Charcoal smoked fish donut with whipped tofu and seaweed; Tongue and turnip skewer, tare glaze and bonito; BBQ prawns with sauce a la bisque and curry leaf; and Pork neck with fermented green garlic, mustard greens and soubise. Could Wednesday be the new Friday?

Barrio BBQ with Guest Chef Alastair Waddell

Kicking off in June, once a month Barrio Eatery & Bar will invite a local chef to collaborate on the BBQ grills in the kitchen to create affordable dishes at fixed prices for the local community to enjoy.

The first event is Wednesday 15 June, with award-winning Scottish-born chef Alastair Waddell from Frida’s Field in Nashua. Alastair is known for his classical training and deft skills in creating delicious, produce-driven cuisine using seasonal crops grown by the farm at Frida’s Field and other local producers.

‘I’m very excited to be representing Frida’s Field at Barrio while cooking over fire with Santiago and the restaurant’s team. Our menu will focus on local beef and pork with some delicious surprises from Frida’s garden too. After working closely with Santiago for many years I am thrilled to be collaborating with him again.’ - says Frida’s Field Chef Alastair Waddell .

And if that’s not enough to lure you out of the house on a Wednesday night, perhaps the prices will: $15 / $25 plates (meat & vegan friendly options). Could Wednesday be the new Friday?

Good Chat is a super casual networking event for people who hate networking.

After a little siesta due to COVID, Good Chat is back, with Dr Jamie Rickcord, director of Ananda Clinics coming to talk about “plant-based medicine and working outside the mainstream.”

The Northern Rivers is a region that's long known the benefits of plants as medicine. Now, thanks to recent changes to the laws and progressive practises like Ananda, everyone can access these treatments in a modern, professional setting. We’re looking forward to a good chat with Doctor Jamie about the important work he’s doing in this field.
